This recipe is for white basmati rice. Brown basmati rice will have a different cook time. Just like regular white and brown rice have different cook times.
Basmati rice is mostly grown and produced in India. Indian basmati rice is known for it’s light flavor and chewy texture.
You can cook basmati rice over the stove, but using the electric pressure cooker ensures basmati rice perfection. And it just feels less hands on too which is always nice.

Basmati Rice Instant Pot Recipe – How To Make
First, start by rinsing off your rice.
Next, place the 1 1/4 cups water into the inner pot, along with the rinsed cup rice and salt.
Secure the lid and turn the valve to the “sealing” position.
Set the timer for 6 minutes on high pressure.
The inner pot pressure will begin to increase and then the timer will start.
When the timer goes off, let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes (natural pressure release). Once the instant pot says “LO: 05”, carefully move the valve to the “venting” position to release the rest of the steam.
As soon as you see the red pin on the instant pot drop, it’s safe to open and the cooked rice is ready! Serve it with curry, your favorite chicken dinner.
Cooking basmati rice is so easy with this instant pot recipe! Enjoy!
Basmati Rice Instant Pot Recipe – Tips
Let rice dry after a little after rinsing. I usually just keep the strainer in the sink for up to 10 minutes to let all the excess water drip off.
If you’re wanting to double the recipe, that’s great! The rice and water ratio amount will change, but there’s no need to change the cooking time. So 2 cups basmati rice will need 2 1/2 cups water.
I always rinse rice before cooking. It helps lower the arsenic levels significantly.
